This professional guide outlines the design basis of pressure tunnels and shafts, covering rock hydraulics, then the need and use, and challenges, of both pervious linings and tight linings using high-grade steels. It covers design and calculation methods, including cost and risk-based design approaches, and safety assessment.
Prof. Dr. Anton J. Schleiss is Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Laboratory of Hydraulic Constructions at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (Ecole Polytechnique federale de Lausanne (EPFL)) and was previously Head of the Hydraulic Structures Section in the Hydropower Department at Electrowatt Engineering Ltd. (now AFRY) in Zurich. He has more than 40 years of experience with large water infrastructure projects and has worked on more than 30 pressure tunnel and shaft projects all over the world as a responsible design engineer or an independent expert. He is the former president of the International Commission on Large Dams and a former council member of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research.
