Discovering Philosophy: Core Buddhism (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798234161772)

Most people, at some point, notice that life does not quite work the way they expected. The early Buddhist teachings begin exactly there.

Discovering Philosophy: Core Buddhism presents the shared foundational teachings of the earliest Buddhist tradition. Drawing primarily on the Pāli Nikāyas and their parallels in the Chinese Āgamas, this book offers a clear and coherent account of:

• The Four Noble Truths
• Dependent Origination
• The three marks of impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and not-self
• The threefold training in ethics, meditation, and wisdom

The emphasis is deliberate. The philosophical and psychological analysis of dukkha (unsatisfactoriness), its causes, its cessation, and the path that leads to that cessation is foregrounded because these elements form a coherent, cross-traditional core that remains accessible and testable in ordinary life. Devotional and communal dimensions of early Buddhism are acknowledged as authentic and historically important, yet they receive proportionally less space so the diagnostic and practical heart of the teaching can be followed with continuity.

No prior background in Buddhism or philosophy is required. The book is written in clear, experience-near language for any reader willing to examine the claims carefully and consider whether this analysis of conditioned experience rings true.

Ideal for newcomers seeking a reliable introduction, as well as for readers who have encountered Buddhism mainly through later traditions or popular presentations and now want a grounded view of the early shared foundation.
