Distorted Discourse: How Fallacies, Bias, and Strategic Maneuvers Shape Critical Thinking and Argument (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798196067372)

Why do intelligent people defend weak arguments?
Why do conversations so often drift away from clarity and toward distortion, evasion, exaggeration, or manipulation?

Distorted Discourse explores how reasoning is shaped not only by logic, but also by rhetoric, psychology, language, emotion, and strategic maneuvering. Drawing on real-life examples from everyday encounters, workplaces, media, politics, law, business, religion, and public discourse, the book examines how conversations and arguments are influenced by fallacies, bias, framing, persuasion, and hidden assumptions.

Rather than treating argument as a purely academic exercise, the book approaches discourse as a practical human activity shaped by motives, social pressures, misunderstandings, and competing interests.

Topics covered in detail through diverse real-life examples include:

• The nature of argument and confrontation - how conversation, negotiation, persuasion, and disagreement operate in real-life exchanges; how controversies emerge and are measured; and how motives shape argumentative behavior.
• Faulty generalization and careless extrapolation - how people draw misleading conclusions from limited experience, statistics, trends, or personal anecdotes, and how narratives are constructed for particular purposes.
• Missing and false information - including lying, misleading statements, false dichotomies, suppressed evidence, irony, amphibology, semantic manipulation, and structural emphasis.
• Shifting the burden of proof - when burden-shifting becomes fallacious and when it does not; reasoning under uncertainty through Bayesian thinking and probability-weighted utility.
• Manipulation and rhetorical tactics - including framing, selective quotation, strategic ambiguity, bias, intentional naïveté, straw man arguments, contra strategies, and related persuasive maneuvers.
• Biased definitions and semantic distortion - models of definition and the use of left-to-right and right-to-left definitions in manipulation; how euphemism, dysphemism, redescription, exaggeration, understatement, and pluralism shape perception.
• Hyperbole and emotional persuasion - how dramatization, social-proof claims, softeners, religious imputation, and rhetorical overstatement or understatement influence belief and behavior.
• Statistical manipulation - misleading numbers, bad data, unrepresentative sampling, psychological pricing, softening, quantitative distortion, and visual manipulation.
• Evasion and rationalization - how people avoid difficult questions, justify questionable actions, shift blame, and protect beliefs from criticism; including evasive tactics and methods of justification.
• False causation and reasoning errors - flawed causal explanations involving oversimplified causes, reverse causation, correlation without causality, constructed causes, and related reasoning errors.

Throughout the book, argumentation is examined not only logically, but also rhetorically, psychologically, and linguistically. The focus is not merely on formal debate, but on the broader dynamics of discourse: how people persuade, defend, evade, reinterpret, accuse, justify, and influence one another in everyday life.

Readers will gain practical tools for:

• recognizing misleading reasoning and manipulation,
• communicating more clearly,
• navigating workplace and personal disagreements,
• evaluating claims more critically,
• understanding persuasive tactics in media and politics,
• and keeping discussions focused on substance rather than distortion.

Balanced, analytical, and accessible, Distorted Discourse offers a practical exploration of how reasoning succeeds, fails, and is strategically shaped in modern human exchange.
