In Ditchbank Diaries, an experimental mingling of prose and poetry she calls haibuñera, Blackwell invites us to walk with her and the thousands before her, ancient puebloans of Chaco Canyon, Spanish colonists of the 16th Century, even the Conservancy ditch rider who patrols her daily route, to explore this largely unknown cultural heritage that defines both geological and spiritual landscape in the Land of Enchantment. In these pages we meet the inhabitants, wild, domesticated, human, and mythological, who create the acequia's "collective imaginary," that sense of place, tradition, sacredness, enchantment, linked to the villages dotting New Mexico's uplands and canyons. There, acequias sustain a precious way of life. However, as Blackwell reveals how the ditchbank walks have transformed her own life, we see that acequias are vital to all of us.

Shirley Balance Blackwell is a bona fide "desert rat," born and raised in mining and ranching towns in Arizona and New Mexico; she claims the Land of Enchantment as home. She and her husband live in the high desert 20 miles outside Albuquerque. In retirement after careers in national security, the Blackwells indulge each others' passions for poetry and music. She attends and sometimes features at poetry readings and writers' workshops; he attends and sometimes plays fiddle at bluegrass, Celtic, and folk music festivals. Blackwell's poetry appears in numerous regional anthologies, including a New Mexico Centennial volume being published in 2013 by UNM Press. Her first full collection of poetry, Already There, (Mercury HeartLink, 2011) was a finalist in the 2012 Arizona-New Mexico Book Awards.
