Doctor William Crawford Gorgas of Alabama and the Panama Canal is a biography written by Thomas W. Martin. The book tells the story of William Crawford Gorgas, a physician from Alabama who was instrumental in the construction of the Panama Canal. Gorgas was appointed Chief Sanitary Officer of the Canal Zone in 1904 and was responsible for implementing measures to control the spread of diseases like yellow fever and malaria, which were rampant in the region at the time. Gorgas' innovative methods, such as fumigation and mosquito control, helped to reduce the incidence of these diseases and made it possible for the canal to be completed. The book provides a detailed account of Gorgas' life, from his childhood in Alabama to his work on the Panama Canal and beyond. It also explores his other achievements, including his contributions to the field of tropical medicine and his role in the development of public health initiatives in the United States. Overall, Doctor William Crawford Gorgas of Alabama and the Panama Canal is a fascinating and informative biography that sheds light on the life and work of a remarkable individual who made a significant impact on the world.Delivered At The 1947 Alabama Dinner Of The Newcomen Society At Birmingham. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
