Born in Lancashire, England, to a Roman Catholic family, John Francis Cross left school at seventeen and worked and traveled in Israel, Holland, France, India and Australia before taking a BA in Chinese and becoming a reporter for a Japanese news agency in Hong Kong. Following an MA in linguistics, he was employed at a key university in China, later moving to a British university where he taught Chinese Studies. He now lives and writes in Tokyo. He has published a variety of literary, academic and journalistic articles and has been a frequent participant in spoken word events in Tokyo and Brighton. He is the author and performer of Fish World, has written a novel, Ghosh in China, and made over 50 short art and poem videos.
