Dummy in a Can: A Dominican-American Novel (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798198891746)

A mother and son relationship will find turmoil again in 1990. Daniel Capellan is back in Nueva York, strolling its cocaine- poisoned streets with one thing in mind, the house in Villa Rosa. It must get finished. It's the way to keep Pa's memory alive. But Mami has other plans. And her strict hands will try to shape Daniel's coming of age.

After serving a punishment of motherly proportions in his country, Daniel returns for a rematch with his uptown neighborhood. But from Hamilton Heights to Washington Heights, the filthy pavements are stickier than ever with dirty dollars. His compatriot cousin, Leandro, is already ranking up in the drug-dealing lifestyle, and ready to lead Daniel down the same path. His American-born, college-bound brother Elias, though, serves as the anchor that may help Daniel and Mami find the closure needed after losing Pa so unexpectedly.

It's the house, which Pa started building before dying, that keeps Daniel's curly cranium focused on earning money. But the bumpy city glide might prevent his golden entrance into adulthood. Will his musical vocation save him? Or, will he succumb to Nueva York as yet another dead Dominican?

Find out in this genre-busting multicultural story in an urban setting. A literary gulp, stirred with crime, suspense, thrill, family drama, and twists of comedy. You will be taken back to a time when beepers still chirped to communicate.
