The author analyzes the change in male earnings inequality since the mid-1970s to see how much is attributable to changes in labor market opportunities and how much to changes in work choices. This research casts doubt on the conventional view that choices have played little or no role; according to these findings, changes in labor market opportunities accounted for less than half the increase in earnings inequality that took place, even among those who were working.
