The War Elephant looks at the Second Punic War (there were three) between Carthage and Rome that took place from 218 BC to 201 BC, from the perspective of two teens: a Carthaginian boy, named Titus and a Syrian girl named Cleopatra, along with one very big African elephant called Surus.
The story follows Titus, who was autistic, and Surus who bonded when the boy was just five years old. Their bond was one of love, trust, courage, compassion that opened Titus's capability to understand the world around him and grow into manhood, while becoming a warrior. Together, they formed a unique friendship in the ancient world that made them a formidable fighting force for Hannibal Barca's army.
