Elder Wisdom: Power In Storytelling (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9798182794213)

Every family has an elder who carries a story no one has asked to hear. Bonnie Markham, a marriage and family therapist, and Aaron Weiss, a clinical bodywork specialist, met by chance at a wellness spa, a joking question about a stiff neck became a story, and the story became a year of conversation, and the conversation started a mission: to connect with the community across multiple generations and ask them to tell the truth about their lives. What they gathered fills this book. A man born into privilege who nearly lost himself to addiction before he found his footing. A woman who grieved a mother lost long before her heart stopped beating. Storytellers who buried shame, broke silence, walked parents home at the end, and finally, late in life, found their own voice. Eight original parables, the Young Sapling, the Winding River, the Waking Ember, and others, are woven between the true accounts, giving the reader a place to breathe between one hard-won truth and the next. Told with unflinching honesty and organized so that each story stands complete on its own, Elder Wisdom argues a simple, radical thing: that the vulnerability we spend a lifetime avoiding is the very thing that heals us, and the person we tell it to matters as much as the telling. For readers of grief memoirs, caregivers of aging parents, therapists, and anyone who has ever wondered what their own grandparent, parent or sibling never said out loud.
