A glimpse of all things Japanese gleaned from my 45 years of personal struggle to survive in a strange foreign land which I eventually embraced as home.
It is the sweltering summer of 1978 and the writer finds herself at Tokyo Shibuya Crossing. Having just landed in the Land of the Rising Sun, the thought of not knowing a single soul in the sea of faces that hurriedly pass by only amplifies her anguish of missing her family and the comfy home she'd left behind in her native Tehran. With the violent revolution in Iran taking hold, it quickly becomes clear that this curious land with its singularly peculiar and well-polished folk will now be her home forever. While her sense of self turns insecure, what follows is a lifetime of brave struggling to find her new identity whilst trying to adapt herself to genteel traditions, entrenched hierarchies and refined rituals. It's a tale of a writer's 45 years of struggle with the dichotomy which is Japan. She reminisces about her initial rebellion against the oddities of an extrinsic culture, eventually coming to realize that her salvation lies in joining it, not fighting it.Thanks for subscribing!
