Emergent Evolution (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781025629421)

"Emergent Evolution" is a seminal exploration into the philosophy of science and biology, detailing C. Lloyd Morgan's influential Gifford Lectures. The work centers on the concept of emergence-the theory that as complex systems evolve, new and unpredictable properties arise that cannot be explained solely by the characteristics of their simpler parts. Morgan meticulously outlines how the world progresses through various levels of organization, from the physical and chemical to the biological and the psychological.

Throughout this profound inquiry, Morgan seeks to reconcile a naturalistic view of the universe with the existence of higher mental functions and the creative novelty of life. He examines the hierarchical nature of reality, the relationship between space-time and the concept of deity, and the philosophical implications of a world in a constant state of becoming. By challenging reductive materialism, Morgan provides a framework for understanding the complexity of existence without abandoning scientific principles.

This work remains a cornerstone of early 20th-century thought, offering vital insights into the history of evolutionary theory and the foundations of modern systems thinking. "Emergent Evolution" is an essential resource for students and scholars of philosophy, biology, and the history of ideas.
