Encyclopedia of Ancient Cosmologies, Volume 1: Foundations, Evidence, and Method

How did ancient peoples understand the universe, the origin of life, the movement of the heavens, the mystery of death, and humanity's place within the greater order of existence?

In the opening volume of Encyclopedia of Ancient Cosmologies, Tony Yustein lays the intellectual foundation for an extraordinary journey across the sacred worlds of ancient civilizations. Rather than presenting mythology as a collection of entertaining stories, Yustein reveals cosmology as something far more complete: a living framework through which societies understood creation, time, nature, political authority, ritual, morality, death, and renewal.

This volume equips readers with the tools needed to explore ancient traditions responsibly and intelligently. It explains how cosmological knowledge survives through clay tablets, inscriptions, temples, tombs, sacred landscapes, astronomical records, oral traditions, ritual performances, art, architecture, calendars, and archaeological remains. It also shows why these forms of evidence cannot be treated as interchangeable. A royal inscription, a funerary text, a philosophical argument, and a story preserved through oral performance each speak from a different historical setting and must be interpreted on their own terms.

Yustein writes with impressive range, patience, and intellectual discipline. He does not flatten diverse civilizations into a single universal mythology, nor does he dismiss ancient cosmologies as failed attempts at modern science. Instead, he guides the reader through the difficult questions that serious comparative study requires. How old is a tradition? Who recorded it? What language was used? Was the surviving manuscript copied centuries after the original composition? Does a modern translation preserve the meaning of an ancient term? When does a striking similarity indicate cultural contact, and when might it reflect independent human responses to the same natural world?

Particular attention is given to translation, chronology, archaeology, sacred geography, cultural astronomy, ritual performance, Indigenous knowledge, community authority, and the responsible handling of contested claims. The volume also confronts modern distortions, including fabricated quotations, unsupported ancient-technology theories, sensational interpretations, and the selective use of evidence. Readers learn not only what ancient sources may tell us, but how to distinguish documented tradition from speculation.

Tony Yustein's achievement is the creation of a method that is both rigorous and accessible. His prose welcomes curious general readers while offering enough depth to satisfy students of mythology, archaeology, religious studies, ancient history, philosophy, anthropology, and astronomy. Complex questions are explained clearly without sacrificing uncertainty, disagreement, or cultural difference.

This is not a book that asks the reader to accept one grand theory about the ancient world. It teaches the reader how to investigate many worlds: worlds formed from primordial waters, divine speech, sacrifice, separation, emergence, transformation, or eternal cycles; worlds organized through sacred mountains, celestial bodies, ancestral powers, temples, kingship, and ritual obligation.

Volume 1 is strongly recommended for anyone who wants to approach ancient cosmology with wonder without abandoning evidence, and with skepticism without losing respect. It is an essential starting point for the full nine-volume series and a substantial reference work in its own right.

With Foundations, Evidence, and Method, Tony Yustein invites readers to look beyond familiar summaries and enter the deeper intellectual landscapes of the ancient world.
