English Pottery (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025438474)

"English Pottery" is a comprehensive and scholarly exploration of the development of ceramic art in England, authored by the distinguished experts Bernard Rackham and Herbert Read. This seminal work provides an in-depth survey of the evolution of pottery, from its early medieval origins through the technical and aesthetic advancements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The text examines the various techniques employed by English potters, including the use of slipware, delftware, stoneware, and the refinement of creamware and porcelain.

Beyond technical details, the authors analyze the social and cultural influences that shaped the industry, highlighting the contributions of key figures and influential regional potteries. By situating English ceramics within the broader context of European art history, Rackham and Read emphasize the unique character and enduring quality of British craftsmanship. This volume serves as an essential resource for collectors, historians, and art enthusiasts, offering a detailed account of the forms, glazes, and decorative styles that define the rich tradition of "English Pottery." With its focus on both utilitarian objects and fine art pieces, the work remains a cornerstone of ceramic literature and an invaluable guide to the history of the decorative arts.
