Era of the Expeditionary Companies: U.S. Marine Corps 1914-1932 (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798858585398)

Between 1914 and 1932 the United States Marine Corps implemented the most profound reinvention of its long history, laying the groundwork for the Fleet Marine Force that triumphed in World War II while:

• Fighting a bloody World War
• Surviving history's deadliest pandemic
• Adopting the technologies introduced in the World War
• Learning to fly
• Fighting Banana Wars in Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua
• Enforcing U.S. Gunboat Diplomacy in China
• Protecting the mail in Roaring '20s America
• Enduring the Great Depression

This study examines that historic transition through a microscope, focusing on the Expeditionary Companies created in 1914 as the foundation units of the reinvented Corps. It unfolds in three parts:

• Era of the Expeditionary Companies: A history of the development of the Marine Corps Expeditionary Force from 1914 through 1932, to place significant organizational changes in the context of historical events

• Expeditionary Forces: Detailed individual capsule histories of:
  • All forces, brigades, regiments, and separate battalions
  • All designated companies
  • All separate platoons and tactical company-equivalent units
  • All aviation commands and squadrons
  • All active reserve commands, companies, separate platoons, and air units

• Appendices:
  • AEF Marine Casual Companies. Detailed individual capsule histories
  • Naval Expeditionary Troops on the Far Shore. Capsule histories of Navy land warfare, base and logistical, hospital, and air units overseas
  • The Fleet Ashore. Detailed accounts of landings by ships' marine detachments and bluejackets, 1914-1932
