Evelina is a novel written by Fanny Burney, which was first published in 1778. The novel is an epistolary novel, which means that it is written in the form of letters. The story follows the life of Evelina, a young woman who is raised in seclusion by a country parson. She is sent to London to be introduced to society, where she experiences a series of misadventures and misunderstandings. Along the way, Evelina falls in love with Lord Orville, a wealthy and well-respected man, but she must navigate the complexities of society and her own personal feelings to find happiness. The novel is a social satire that provides a humorous and insightful look into the customs and conventions of 18th-century England. It is also a coming-of-age story that explores themes of identity, class, and gender. Evelina is considered to be one of the earliest and most influential novels of the English language and is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of literature. Thus it has happened, that the education of the father, daughter, and grand-daughter, has devolved on me. What infinite misery have the two first caused me!
