Expressions of Religious Thought and Feeling in the Chansons de Geste is a book written by Marianna Gildea. The book explores the religious themes present in medieval French epic poems known as chansons de geste. The chansons de geste were popular during the 11th to the 14th centuries and were characterized by their heroic and epic narratives. Gildea analyzes the religious elements present in these poems, including the portrayal of God, the use of miracles, and the depiction of saints. She also examines the relationship between religion and the secular world in the chansons de geste, exploring how religious values were intertwined with the societal norms of the time. Through her analysis, Gildea argues that the chansons de geste were not just works of entertainment, but also served as a means of conveying religious beliefs and values to the medieval audience. The book provides a unique perspective on the intersection of religion and literature during the Middle Ages and sheds light on the religious attitudes and beliefs of medieval society. Overall, Expressions of Religious Thought and Feeling in the Chansons de Geste is a valuable resource for scholars and students of medieval literature, religion, and history.
