Facade Design vs Cooling Loads (Glazing Reality Check) (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798259149274)

For decades, the building industry has celebrated glass as a symbol of progress, transparency, and modernity. Entire skylines have been reshaped by curtain walls and glazed towers that promise light-filled interiors and architectural elegance. But behind this visual success lies a quieter, often ignored reality: glass is one of the most thermally challenging materials in building design.

This book, Facade Design vs Cooling Loads (Glazing Reality Check), was written to bridge a persistent gap between architectural intent and mechanical performance. Too often, façade decisions are made early-driven by aesthetics, branding, or urban identity-while their impact on cooling loads is either underestimated or simplified in simulation tools. The result is familiar to many engineers: oversized chillers, uncomfortable occupants near perimeter zones, persistent hot spots, and energy bills that refuse to align with design expectations.

The objective of this work is not to criticize glazing or modern façade design, but to re-establish balance. Glass is not the enemy; poor integration is. When façade design is disconnected from HVAC logic, the building pays for it every hour of operation.

Across these chapters, we will examine how heat actually enters a building through glazing, how cooling loads are amplified by orientation and design choices, and how façade systems interact with HVAC performance in ways that are often overlooked. The goal is to move from assumption-based design to performance-driven decision-making.

This is not a theoretical discussion. It is grounded in real-world building behavior, operational inefficiencies, and the recurring patterns seen across commercial, hospitality, and institutional projects. The intent is simple: to help professionals design buildings that look impressive and perform responsibly.
