It is not really a conventional fairy tale as there are no Princesses in distress, no witches, no kings or queens and no handsome Princess coming to the Princesses' rescue. Our hero, Hans, after working away from home for 7 years, was paid a piece of gold for his labours. But during his travels to get home to his mother, he encounters a number of characters, far cleverer than Hans is, who persuade him to exchange his gold for items of far less value until at the end he has nothing left. However, our hero still feels himself very lucky and goes home to his mother happy and singing.
