The author is a retired U.S. Army Colonel, with a doctorate from The New York Theological Seminary. For ten years, he taught Islamic religion, history and cultural studies (in Arabic and English) to military and civilian personnel at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California (1979-1986) and the U.S. Army Chaplain School at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, N.Y. (1973-1975). He also taught this and other subjects at the Adult Institute of Arizona State University for two years (1995-1997). His training for these endeavors, was pursued on the graduate level at Duke University under the tutelage of Professor Bruce Lawrence
