Falsehood in War-Time (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025653471)

"Falsehood in War-Time" is a seminal examination of the deliberate use of misinformation and propaganda during the First World War. Written by Arthur Ponsonby, a prominent British politician and peace advocate, this work meticulously catalogs the various lies, fabrications, and exaggerations disseminated by belligerent governments to incite hatred and sustain public support for the conflict. From the infamous tales of mutilated soldiers to the strategic distortion of diplomatic communications, Ponsonby reveals the psychological machinery used to manipulate the masses in times of international crisis.

This classic study remains an essential text for understanding the ethics of political communication and the nature of wartime deception. By dissecting specific instances of falsehoods circulated by both the Allied and Central Powers, Ponsonby provides a chilling look at how "truth is the first casualty of war." The book serves not only as a historical record of the Great War but also as a timeless warning about the vulnerability of public opinion to official manipulation. Readers interested in military history, political science, and media studies will find "Falsehood in War-Time" to be a profound and enduringly relevant analysis of the power of the state to shape perception through the strategic use of untruths.
