From their history and origins to the numerous sorts of fancy rats and why they make good pets, this chapter lays the groundwork for a pleasant adventure into the world of fancy rat care. History & Origins The domestication of rats dates back to the early 18th century in Europe. Initially viewed as pests, their intelligence and trainability quickly drew the attention of rat catchers, who started to retain and raise them for fun. The name "fancy rat" originates in England, where the National Fancy Rat Society (NFRS) was founded in 1976 to encourage breeding and caring for these pets. Fancy rats are descended from the wild brown rat (Rattus norvegicus). Selective breeding has improved features like coat color, pattern, and temperament, resulting in the diversified and pleasant rats we know today. Fancy rats, unlike their wild counterparts, are bred for domestication, resulting in animals that are more sociable and more adapted to living with people. Various Types of Fancy Rats Fancy rats come in a variety of colors, coat kinds, and patterns. Understanding the various breeds may assist future owners in selecting the appropriate pet for their needs. Some popular varieties of fancy rats are: - Standard Rats: These are the most common kind, distinguished by smooth, short hair and standard ear shapes. - Dumbo Rats: Named for their bigger, rounder ears that lay lower on the sides of their heads, giving them a unique and endearing look. - The Rex Rats: Rex rats may be identified by their curly hair and whiskers, as well as their distinct texture. - Hairless rats: As the name implies, these rats have no hair, revealing their smooth, exposed skin. - The Satin Rats: Satin rats are distinguished by their lustrous, glossy hair, which reflects light nicely. - Hooded Rat: These rats have a unique color pattern, with a colorful head and shoulders and a white body that resembles a hooded cloak. Why Get a Fancy Rat as a Pet? Fancy rats are excellent pets for various reasons. Their intelligence and trainability make them engaging companions. Rats, unlike many tiny pets, can learn names, do tricks, and even traverse mazes. Their problem-solving ability and curiosity keep them interested in new challenges, offering unending amusement for their owners. Furthermore, fancy rats are very gregarious creatures. They thrive on contact with both humans and other rats, making them excellent for persons who have the time and want to build strong bonds with their pets. Rats like being handled, caressed, and even cuddling with their owners, demonstrating a degree of compassion and trust that is unusual for tiny animals.
