Father Damien (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025650890)

"Father Damien" is a powerful and passionate open letter written by Robert Louis Stevenson in defense of the Belgian missionary priest who dedicated his life to serving the residents of the leper colony on the island of Molokai, Hawaii. Stevenson composed this spirited polemic after reading a letter from a Reverend Dr. Hyde that disparaged Father Damien's character and work following the priest's death from leprosy.

In this work, Stevenson employs his formidable literary skills to craft a brilliant rhetorical defense, emphasizing Damien's humanity, sacrifice, and the profound impact of his ministry. While Stevenson himself was not a Catholic, he was moved by Damien's selfless devotion to the marginalized and suffering. The text provides a vivid glimpse into the social and religious tensions of the late 19th century, particularly regarding the treatment of those afflicted with Hansen's disease.

This essay remains a significant piece of non-fiction, showcasing Stevenson's commitment to justice and his ability to engage in complex moral arguments. "Father Damien" stands as a testament to the power of the written word to challenge prejudice and honor the legacy of individuals who devote their lives to the service of others.
