Gainer, Professor Emeritus of English at West Virginia University, was widely-renowned as a collector of folklore, as a musician, educator, and founder of the West Virginia Folk Festival at Glenville. He received too many accolades to list them all. A highlight of his career was in 1972 when he was honored by WVU with the Most Loyal Mountaineer Award for his service to the University and his dedicated efforts over the years to preserve mountain culture.
