Flash forward thirteen years and she's living in NYC, her mother the top pediatrician at Children's Hospital. Only, Fern is sick; she can't keep down any food, can't sleep, and has terrible headaches and coughing fits. After months of inconclusive tests, her mother wakes her in the dead of the night and moves them to a cabin in a mysterious town in the middle of nowhere.
