As the parents moved the child from one small town to another, Howard Denson was aware of the story-telling contraptions in his life. In Jasper, Ala., he rocked to the rhythm of "Strip Polka" as the band sang "Take it off, take it off, cried the boys from the rear." In Vidalia, Ga., he had his own pants scared off by the Wolfman, Frankenstein, and the Mummy. Bugs and Porky instructed him at the movies, as did Donald and Mickey. They cropped up again on TV screens in Pensacola, where they showed fables with Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, and The Three Stooges. (He became Stooge aware during Shemp's tenure.) Radio and TV often featured Stan Freberg, and, as he read about humor and dogs, he discovered James Thurber and tracked him through the libraries of Pensacola, Norfolk, and beyond.
