Carmem Dametto is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with the Brazilian Psychoanalysis Society - Rio de Janeiro Branch (SBPRJ). She was born in Garibaldi, State of Rio Grande do Sul, in 1941 and has been living in Rio de Janeiro since the 1970s. She was persecuted during the Military Dictatorship in Brazil because of her Marxist background. Perhaps it is due to her line of reasoning that she has been able to implement an innovative therapeutic approach with her patients. She has written five books and co-founded the former "Margaridas" Protected Hostel, which was a dynamic clinic with in-patients that also worked as half-way house. She was a Full Professor of Psychiatry in Vassouras and Chief Supervisor at the first dynamic treatment clinic "Vila Pinheiros," open in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s.
