Firefly Daughter: A La Diablesse Story (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781257644179)

Firefly Daughter: A La Diablesse Story In the shadowed heart of Trinidad, where power blooms like roses over graves and folklore walks beside the living, a child is born in blood and silence. Her name is Shari La Fontaine-though to the Tannous dynasty, she is nothing more than a stain to be buried. Concealed by loyal hands and protected by whispers of the old spirits, Shari grows unaware of her cursed birthright. But the day violence comes for her, the girl is torn apart-and something older, fiercer, is forged in her place. What rises from the swamp and the sorrow is not a victim, but an avatar of vengeance. Shari becomes the La Diablesse, a figure from Trinidadian legend reborn in flesh and fury, a woman who wears beauty as a weapon and carries justice in her cloven step. Guided and tested by the Mystics-Papa Bois, Mama D'Leau, soucouyants, and Pierrot Grenades-Shari must decide whether she will wield the power or let it consume her. At the center of her torment stands the Tannous family, a dynasty rotted by greed and violence. Idris Tannous, patriarch and predator, builds his empire on oil money, political corruption, and broken women. His children-Nicholas, Nadia, and the generations raised under his shadow-carry the poison of his legacy in different ways: entitlement, rebellion, silence. Their lives entwine with Shari's in a spiral of betrayal, forbidden love, and unburied secrets. Through Shari's journey, the novel unveils a Trinidad rarely seen in fiction-opulent estates in Maraval dripping with corruption, Carnival nights where masquerade and murder dance together, and swamps where the old gods still speak. From whispered Obeah rites to the blood-stained boardrooms of Port of Spain, the story pulses with both ancestral mysticism and the stark realities of wealth and exploitation. Yet Firefly Daughter is not only about vengeance. It is a story of survival, of women whose voices were meant to be silenced but who carve truth into the marrow of history. Shari's half-sister Nadia, exiled yet unbroken, wages her own war with pen and headline, proving that truth can be as dangerous as any curse. Aunt Alaina, cast aside for choosing freedom, becomes a shield and mentor, teaching Nadia that survival can be rebellion. Even the estate cook and midwife Mabienne, wielding Obeah and memory, risks her life to cradle the seed of change in the next generation. In the end, Firefly Daughter is a Trinidadian Gothic saga about the ghosts we inherit, the curses we
