First Steps in the Use of the Pedal for Piano (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025655062)

"First Steps in the Use of the Pedal for Piano" is a foundational pedagogical guide designed to introduce beginning piano students to the essential art of pedaling. Written by esteemed music educator Dorothy Gaynor Blake, this instructional work simplifies a complex aspect of piano performance, breaking down the mechanics and artistic application of the damper pedal into manageable, progressive lessons.

The book focuses on developing the necessary coordination between the hands and the feet, ensuring that students understand both the technical mechanics and the expressive purpose of pedal usage. Through a series of carefully graded exercises and short musical pieces, Blake illustrates various techniques, including syncopated pedaling and the use of the pedal for tonal enrichment. The clear instructions and melodic examples help students avoid common pitfalls, such as blurred harmonies or mechanical noise, fostering a more nuanced and professional sound from the early stages of study.

As a significant contribution to 20th-century music education, "First Steps in the Use of the Pedal for Piano" remains a valuable resource for teachers and students seeking a logical, step-by-step approach to mastering one of the piano's most critical expressive tools. Its emphasis on active listening and rhythmic precision makes it an enduring staple in the field of piano pedagogy.
