He managed to escape with part of his family during the Korean War at the age of six. His family eventually moved to the United States, and in 1979 Dr. Kim settled in Knoxville, Tennessee with his goal of "repaying his debt to America for the gift of a new life." Dr. Kim was raised in a strong Christian environment, where he was taught to follow the example of Christ and become a light to the world. He believes that all people are challenged to love their neighbors as Jesus commanded. This includes providing our poor neighbors with the health care they deserve, and not simply relying on the government to respond to this need.
