Fixed in Silver is the fifth volume of the Gluck Family Legacy Series, a photographic history of one Jewish family before, during, and after the Holocaust.
Drawn from family albums, wartime snapshots, portraits, military photographs, immigration records, and other surviving visual evidence, the book follows the Glück family from village life in Polyán through emigration, war, persecution, loss, survival, and rebuilding in America. Many of the photographs are presented with detailed captions that restore names, relationships, places, and stories that might otherwise have been forgotten.
The volume also documents the author's effort to identify relatives in previously unrecognized photographs. Facial comparisons, family letters, memoirs, prisoner records, transport documentation, survivor testimony, and the original arrangement of photographs within family albums are brought together to reconstruct identities across generations. Among the most consequential inquiries is the tentative identification of members of the Glück and Schwartz families in photographs from the Auschwitz Album.
More than a family photograph album, Fixed in Silver is an exploration of how historical memory is recovered: one face, one document, and one surviving image at a time. Together with the other volumes of the Gluck Family Legacy Series, it preserves an unusually extensive record of a family scattered by migration and devastated by the Holocaust, while restoring individuality to people whom history nearly reduced to names on a page.
