Footsteps Through Edinburgh: A Walking Tour Guide to Historic Routes, Hidden Gems, and Iconic Landmarks (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798258911988)

WALK EDINBURGH LIKE YOU LIVE THERE AND SEE EVERYTHING THE BUS TOURS MISSEdinburgh is one of the most visited cities in Europe, and yet most people who go there never truly see it.
They follow the same well-worn path from the castle to the Royal Mile, snap a photograph at the top of Calton Hill, and leave with the feeling that they have ticked the boxes without quite touching the city. They do not find the medieval close that drops away from the High Street into a courtyard that feels unchanged for four hundred years. They do not stand on the summit of Arthur's Seat with the whole of Edinburgh laid out below them and the Firth of Forth glittering beyond. They do not stumble upon a riverside village folded into a gorge half a mile from Princes Street, or discover the pub on Rose Street where Scotland's greatest twentieth-century poets gathered week after week to drink, argue, and make literature. They leave Edinburgh having visited it without ever really knowing it. And that is a loss that is entirely avoidable.
This guide exists to change that.
Written specifically for travellers, history enthusiasts, photographers, and curious explorers who want to experience Edinburgh the way it deserves to be experienced, this is a walking guide that goes far beyond the obvious. It covers eleven carefully crafted routes through the full breadth of the city, from the iconic to the overlooked, from the grand civic set pieces to the hidden corners that even many Edinburgh residents have never found. Every route is designed for the walker on foot, moving at a pace that lets the city reveal itself properly, with practical guidance on how to get there, what to look for, and how to make the most of every stop along the way.
Here is a glimpse of what awaits you inside:

• A complete walking guide to the Royal Mile, covering every major landmark from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse with honest, practical detail
• The Old Town's hidden closes, eight of the most atmospheric and fascinating pedestrian routes in Europe, including the underground streets of Mary King's Close
