When Queen Victoria created the Most Venerable Order of St John in Britain in 1877, it led to the St John Ambulance Brigade, a voluntary body of men and women, and later children, who serve the community to believe that it's absolutely unacceptable that so many people die needlessly - because no one could give them first aid when they needed it. St John Ambulance teaches people first aid. The Brighton Division was registered in 1915 during World War 1 and this is their story over the Centenary.

Born in Leicester, in the Midlands of England in 1948, the older of two brothers, David Shelton moved to Brighton and Hove on the South Coast, where he grew up and joined the Cub Scouts, moving through the organisation to senior Scouts. He started learning First Aid at 7 and has never stopped from training, continuing at work to teach staff and then joining St John Ambulance. David always cares for anyone in trouble or requiring emergency medical help. His other interests include singing in a choir and a large choral society, and his family of a son and daughter who were also members of St John.
