Fort Ticonderoga: The Fortress That Guarded the Road to America (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798177599700)

**Fort Ticonderoga: The Fortress That Changed Hands and Shaped a Revolution**

At a strategic crossroads between Lake Champlain and Lake George, Fort Ticonderoga became one of the most important military strongholds in early American history.

Originally constructed by the French as Fort Carillon during the French and Indian War, the fortress witnessed fierce fighting between competing empires struggling for control of North America. In 1758, a smaller French force famously defeated a much larger British army outside its defenses. A year later, the British captured the fort and renamed it Ticonderoga.

Its story was far from over.

When the American Revolution began, Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, and the Green Mountain Boys seized Fort Ticonderoga in a daring 1775 attack. The fort's artillery soon became even more important when Henry Knox transported its cannon across hundreds of miles of winter wilderness to Boston, helping force the British evacuation of the city.

Fort Ticonderoga would change hands again as the Revolution continued, demonstrating both the strategic importance and limitations of the famous stronghold.

In this volume of **The Fort History Series**, Steven Thomas explores the people, battles, geography, construction, weapons, campaigns, and decisions that made Fort Ticonderoga a crucial part of the struggle for North America.

From the French and Indian War through the American Revolution and the fort's eventual preservation, **Fort Ticonderoga** tells the story of a fortress whose importance reached far beyond its stone walls.

For readers of military history, colonial history, the American Revolution, and historic forts, this book provides a detailed and accessible look at one of America's most remarkable historic sites.
