He wrote for the Detroit Free Press, the Charlotte Observer, the Charlotte News, and the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel.He served as editor in chief for the Charlotte News and the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel. Under his direction, the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1983.
Spencer is a proud graduate of Duke University. He is now retired and lives in North Carolina.
