Frozen Conquest: The Swedish Winter Campaign That Changed Scandinavia Forever

In the bitter winter of 1658, Swedish King Charles X Gustav accomplished what military strategists deemed impossible: marching an entire army across the frozen straits of Denmark to conquer Copenhagen. This meticulously researched historical narrative chronicles one of the most audacious military campaigns in European history and its lasting consequences for Scandinavian borders that endure to this day.

From the geopolitical tensions that sparked the conflict to the catastrophic Danish defeats, the book examines how extreme weather created an unprecedented strategic opportunity. The March Across the Belts saw twelve thousand Swedish troops crossing miles of groaning ice in a campaign that would redraw the map of Northern Europe. But military conquest proved only the beginning of a far longer struggle.

Through thirty detailed chapters, the narrative explores the Treaty of Roskilde's harsh terms, the brutal Swedish occupation of conquered territories, and the desperate resistance movements that emerged. The forced conscription that devastated Tr ndelag, the Bornholm uprising that assassinated the Swedish governor, and the prolonged Snapphane guerrilla war reveal the human costs of territorial conquest. The book concludes by examining how the 1660 Treaty of Copenhagen established borders that have remained essentially unchanged for over three and a half centuries, making this settlement among the most durable in European history.
