In 1589, age 25, Galileo was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa, and made significant discoveries in both fundamental science, and applied science. His interests included the study of mathematics, astronomy and medicine. Additionally, Galileo worked in practical hydraulic engineering, obtaining a patent from the Venetian Republic for a horse-powered water pump in 1594, at age 30.
