It gives the reader a basic understanding of the conflict. The volume is also a biographical sketch of Virginia plantation owner George Washington, who decided to confront the tyrannical practices of the British Government. He accepted the position of Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, while realizing the soldiers he commanded had no chance in a war against British regulars, and Hessian mercenaries. General Washington was happy that at Saratoga, New York, October 17, 1777, British General John Burgoyne surrendered an army of over 5,000 to Continental General Horatio Gates. After this victory, the French supported the continental patriot cause. In 1778 the British were at Philadelphia. George Washington's Continentals were at Valley Forge. The Commander in Chief wrote many letters to help his army. He also prayed regularly for providential assistance. The French took over two years to send an army and a navy to North America. However, miraculously at Valley Forge in February 1778, help did arrive This help and French support made the Great War end, with a total Continental victory, three years later in Virginia.

David S. Igneri is a "born on the fourth of July", Italian American. Although Brooklyn, New York was his birthplace in 1944, the Igneri family moved to Patchogue, Long Island. After high school in Patchogue, he attended college at Brockport State University, where he received his B.S. in Education in 1966. He taught thirty-three years as a public school teacher, retiring in 1998. Always fascinated in history, Igneri received a number of graduate degrees. He received his Ph.D. in Colonial American History, from the Union Institute in 1992. He taught American and European History, as an adjunct Professor, at Dowling College, and Long Island University from 1999-2004. He later taught American History at Briarcliffe College from 2009-2010. The father of two children, David S. Igneri lives in Patchogue with his wife Elizabeth. George Washington ... is his sixth book, and his fourth history book. Many more are planned for the future.
