Get Too Attached: Collective Wisdom on Fostering Babies

Everyone assumes babies are the "easy" placements, too young to remember, too small to be hurt. Alicia McCormick knows better.

Since 2019, McCormick has fostered thirty-four babies through Emergency Shelter Home care in California, opening her door again and again to newborns arriving straight from crisis. In Get Too Attached, she shares her own story alongside those of dozens of other foster parents, each answering the same six questions about welcoming a baby into trauma, healing, and love, how they began fostering, what trauma looks like in an infant, how they learned to read their baby's signs of pain, and what they wish every prospective foster parent understood before saying yes.

Told in short, digestible chapters, this collective portrait dismantles the myth that babies enter foster care as blank slates. It reveals instead a community of parents who chose to attach fiercely, even knowing goodbye might come at any moment because a baby who is loved without reservation heals faster than one who is loved cautiously.

Equal parts memoir, guidebook, and love letter to the babies who can't yet tell their own stories, Get Too Attached is essential reading for anyone fostering, considering fostering, or simply hoping to understand what it really takes to hold a child through their hardest beginning and let go with grace when the time comes.
