Get Your Compost Working: Solve Odor, Moisture, and Slow Breakdown Problems in Backyard Bins, Piles, and Tumblers (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798177562131)

Your compost should be working-not sitting there wet, smelly, clumped, or unchanged.

Get Your Compost Working is a practical troubleshooting guide for backyard composters who already have a bin, pile, or tumbler and need to understand what is going wrong and what to do next.

Stop guessing and learn to read the material in front of you.

Instead of relying on one universal recipe, this book shows you how to inspect moisture, structure, airflow, recent inputs, temperature, weather, and feeding history before making a correction.

Inside, you will learn how to:

- Diagnose persistent odor without masking it with another product

- Break apart wet mats, dense clumps, and tumbler balls

- Rewet a dry center without saturating the rest of the batch

- Understand what greens, browns, moisture, and structure actually contribute

- Use bins, open piles, and tumblers according to their different limitations

- Interpret compost temperature without chasing a particular number

- Stop feeding a batch so it can finally finish and cure

- Handle unwanted inputs, wildlife problems, and possible herbicide carryover cautiously

- Decide whether compost is truly ready for its intended use

- Calculate an application amount instead of spreading everything simply because it is available

Real cases turn troubleshooting into a repeatable process.

Seven fictional household cases, decision tables, diagrams, moisture checks, batch-status tools, and a complete readiness assessment show how to move from a vague problem to a specific correction-and then verify whether that correction actually worked.

Whether your compost smells sour, stays wet, dries out inside, refuses to break down, or never seems finished, this book will help you make the next useful decision with less waste, less guesswork, and a system you can manage.
