John Francis Cross: Born in Lancashire, England, he left school at seventeen and worked for several years in Israel, Holland, France and Australia before taking a BA in Chinese and becoming a reporter for a Japanese news agency in Hong Kong. Following an MA in linguistics, he was employed at a key university in China, later moving to a British university where he taught Chinese-English translation and Chinese Studies. He has published a variety of literary, academic and journalistic writing, and has been a frequent participant in spoken word events in Tokyo and Brighton.
