Raised in North Dakota, Vincent L. Hoffart, after graduating from high school, worked for several years as a communication technician in that area until his hob with the US Signal Corps took him to Spokane, Washington. There he accepted the position of engineer for a new radio station. He later became chief engineer of that station while working in maintenance and installation at several other stations in Washington.

At one station Mr. Hoffart worked for Mr. Lester Smith, owner, along with Mr. and Mrs. Danny Kaye, of station KISW. Mr. Hoffart had been discharged by Mr. Smith in 1976 for what later was explained as job unsuitability, being out of step with other employees and for recommending a woman as manager of his Spokane station. Hoffart, however, believes his dismissal was due to his exposure of payola activities in 1975. Management denied the charges, and Mr. Smith backed management.

Hoffart is a charter member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers with certified senior status. He was recently granted Life Membership. The author married in 1942 and has two sons and three grandchildren. His wife is the former Alvina Krieg from Linton, North Dakota.
