Goethe and the Jews: A Challenge to Hitlerism (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781432561673)

""Goethe and the Jews: A Challenge to Hitlerism"" by Mark Waldman is a thought-provoking exploration of the relationship between the famous German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the Jewish people. The book examines Goethe's attitudes towards Jews as expressed in his writings and personal interactions, and how they challenged the anti-Semitic ideology that would later fuel the Nazi regime.Waldman delves into Goethe's life and work, analyzing his complex views on religion, culture, and identity. He also explores the historical context of the time, including the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany and the broader European context. The book draws on a wide range of sources, including Goethe's letters, diaries, and literary works, as well as historical documents and scholarship.Throughout the book, Waldman argues that Goethe's views on Jews were nuanced and often contradictory, but ultimately reflected a deep respect for their contributions to German culture and society. He also argues that Goethe's legacy continues to challenge modern-day anti-Semitism and other forms of prejudice and intolerance.Overall, ""Goethe and the Jews: A Challenge to Hitlerism"" is a thought-provoking and illuminating read for anyone interested in the intersection of literature, history, and social justice. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
