Gold Beneath The Hill (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781923441798)

Before Sovereign Hill became one of Australia's most celebrated open-air museums, it was a working landscape shaped by gold, ambition, innovation, and tragedy. Most visitors know that Ballarat was a place where rich alluvial gold was discovered in 1851, helping to spark the Victorian gold rush. Far fewer know the remarkable story of the rich nugget discoveries and the mines that later made Sovereign Hill one of Ballarat's most important centres of quartz mining.

Drawing on newspapers, company records, government reports, and contemporary accounts, Gold Beneath the Hill uncovers the forgotten history of the men and women who lived and worked beneath and around the famous hill. The book follows the search for hidden deep leads, the rise of pioneering quartz mines, the influence of local entrepreneurs and overseas investors, and the fortunes won and lost in the pursuit of gold.

Along the way are stories of innovation, labour disputes, spectacular successes, financial intrigue, environmental challenges, accidents, and disasters. Familiar names such as the Sovereign, Speedwell, and Normanby mines-along with Ted Tinworth, Thomas Tregurtha, and Alice Cornwell-emerge alongside lesser-known miners, tributers, and investors whose efforts helped shape Ballarat's mining industry.

Richly illustrated throughout, this book provides the background sought by visitors who wish to learn more about this iconic location. For those yet to visit Sovereign Hill, it offers a compelling reason to travel to Ballarat and discover the remarkable mining history that lies beneath one of Australia's most famous heritage attractions.
