The rapid decline of Haiti results from a combination of complex and harmful factors, among which are many individuals elevated to power by the international community. These individuals come to power solely to appease the international community, not to serve the Haitian people. The country has been remotely governed for decades, and it is time to find a new path forward.
Haiti can chart a new course through an educational system that better reflects its realities and by strengthening its institutions, particularly the judicial system. Corruption has long been seen as a means to gain and maintain power, thus perpetuating the country's destructive cycle since its independence. On this new path, corruption at all levels must be considered one of the nation's most serious crimes, and those convicted must serve long prison sentences.
