In 1946 Keith graduated from the University of Texas NROTC Unit with a commission in the Navy. Later in his career he would earn master's degrees in Physics (Naval Postgraduate School) & International Affairs (George Washington University) & serve as the Co-Chairman of the Physics Department at the Naval Academy. During his 29-year Naval career, Keith served aboard ships as Navigator, First Lieutenant, & Chief Engineer, then as Commanding Officer of three different ships. Although a normal tour is twelve months, in recognition of his success in command of a destroyer, he was awarded a "bonus tour" of 27-months as Commander of a five-ship destroyer escort squadron (CORTRON TEN). During that time he flew his Broad Command pennant from at least ten different ships, including at least one from each of the three classes of DE's (destroyer escorts) in the Navy, two DD's (destroyers) and one DLG (guided missile frigate). After retiring from the Navy in 1975 he held a wide variety of engineering and management positions including two years in Saudi Arabia where he established and became the first General Manager of the Royal Saudi Navy Ship System Support & Research Center. He retired from these endeavors in 1996 & since then has done exhaustive genealogical research. His autobiography, "Escape To Security" was published in 2003.
