Gerard Rose, a native of Australia, is a retired politician, and an advocate for a wide variety of civic causes. His higher education included stints at the University of Santa Clara and the Rome campus of Loyola University. Over the years he has served as a scout leader; PTA president; a director of his children's grammar school; a ten year member of the Carmel City Council; a director of his city's redevelopment agency; president of his city's fire/ambulance authority; president of the Carmel Gallery Alliance; and a director of his city's cultural arts center. His service as an officer in the US Navy during the Vietnam War included tours throughout the western Pacific, including Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. After serving active duty in the Navy, he taught international law and national strategy to senior Naval officers, and while practicing law, he would occasionally lecture law students in advanced torts and insurance law. He is married to a clinical psychologist, and has five children and four grandchildren. These days he regularly travels back and forth between California and Illinois, and while on route he can usually be found trying, yet again, to create the great American novel.
