The Author: Jean M. Brainard is assistant professor of anthropology at The Ohio State University. She has also taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Utah and has been a research fellow at Harvard University and the University of Nairobi. She has published articles on demographic and medical anthropology in several scholarly journals and collected works. Professor Brainard received a Ph.D. in anthropology from SUNY at Binghamton and a postdoctoral M.S. degree in population sciences from Harvard University.
