The King's Rd & the Kilburn High Rd London 1976-1979

You are the end point of an unbroken chain of survival. Every person who came before you - through plague, war, famine, and flood - lived long enough to pass forward what was necessary for you to exist. You did not begin when you were born. You began when humanity began. Everything that happened between that beginning and this moment is not the past in any abstract sense. It is the story of the making of you.

This book takes you to one of the most extraordinary moments in that story. London. 1976-1979. A city running out of money and out of the story it had told itself since the war. Three million unemployed. A generation handed no future - who made one anyway. In rooms the size of kitchens, with three chords and a photocopier, they changed what was allowed. The forty people who attended one Sex Pistols concert in Manchester in 1976 went on to form the bands, labels, and fanzines that defined a decade. The arguments about what punk was - rebellion or performance, revolution or marketing - have never stopped.

Here's a Chord: On Punk Music asks what it felt like to be inside that moment. Not as Johnny Rotten. Not as Malcolm McLaren. As the ordinary girl - the shopgirl at 430 King's Road who folded the clothes, rang the till, and drew in the receipt book after hours.

• What did those small rooms actually feel like from the inside?
• What is the difference between performing a revolution and making one?
• What does rage become when it is turned into work?
• What is the thing that passes from hand to hand without document - and is the real inheritance?

The facts are extraordinary enough.

• The Sex Pistols were paid and dropped by three major labels before their debut album was released.
• God Save the Queen is widely believed to have reached number one during Silver Jubilee week. The chart discrepancy has never been fully explained.
• The sleeve of Unknown Pleasures is a diagram of radio pulses from a dead star, taken from a Cambridge astronomy encyclopedia. The band never saw the artwork before it was pressed.
• The Roxy club in Covent Garden ran for exactly one hundred nights - and changed British music permanently.

History is not a sequence of dates. It is billions of lives lived forward, each one as urgent and full of small irreplaceable moments as your own.

Sodium orange streetlamps on wet tarmac. The bass through the floor before you had heard the music. Chips in paper in the cold air. A Yale key in the pocket. A door not yet pushed.

They made something in rooms too small for monuments - and it is still transmitting. This book is the attempt of one ordinary witness - a girl who understood things by drawing them - to answer.

For homeschooling families: You are already doing the most important thing - putting the story of humanity directly into your children's hands. The Beyond His Story We Stand series was written for you. Each book takes one moment in human history and makes it lived rather than memorised, felt rather than filed away. Not a textbook. Not a syllabus. A story your child will not want to put down - and that will leave them asking the questions that no curriculum can generate for them. The questions that only wonder produces.

Here's a Chord: On Punk Music - part of the Beyond His Story We Stand series - a chronological journey through human history, told through the eyes of the people official history forgot to record.

Three chords. A needle. A length of cloth. Made in a city that said there was no future. They said otherwise - and the music is still playing.
