Hereward, The Wake is a historical novel written by Charles Kingsley and published in 1898. The book is divided into two volumes and tells the story of Hereward, a legendary Anglo-Saxon hero who fought against the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th century. The first volume begins with a description of Hereward's childhood and his upbringing in the fens of East Anglia. The story then follows his journey as a young man, where he becomes a skilled warrior and leader. Hereward's bravery and cunning are tested as he leads a rebellion against the invading Normans, who have taken control of England under the leadership of William the Conqueror. The second volume continues the story of Hereward's rebellion and the battles he fought against the Normans. It also explores his personal relationships, including his love for a woman named Torfrida, who becomes his loyal companion and advisor throughout his struggles. The novel ends with the defeat of Hereward's rebellion and his eventual exile to Flanders. Throughout the book, Kingsley portrays Hereward as a heroic figure who embodies the virtues of courage, loyalty, and patriotism. He also provides a detailed look at the social and political context of the time, including the tensions between the Anglo-Saxon and Norman cultures.
